The Silent Why: finding hope in grief and loss
The (even more) Silent Why (& the Mediterranean Sea)
#132. Life is hectic. Sometimes we simply need to stop for a moment. And that’s what this short episode is all about.
Oh, and the beautiful sounds of the Mediterranean Sea that I recorded when we were in Cyprus.
Welcome to The Silent Why podcast, here to help you navigate loss and grief, and possibly... find hope.
These very short, episodes will pop up every now and then to help you take a moment to check in and see how you're really feeling.
Less than 7 minutes total, including 2 minutes of time for you and you alone - join me (Claire Sandys, podcast host) in an imaginary place and allow yourself to press pause on life for a short while.
And for this episode, I'm asking you to sit on the beach with me in Cyprus, in front of the Mediterranean Sea, as the water laps at our feet, and just take a moment to pause.

Thank you for listening.
Hello, Welcome to the even more Silent Why podcast. I don't think it's just me that's noticed how crazy and stressful life feels nowadays. It's tiring right? Relentless, hectic hard work on all levels mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. There's pressure on all sides, even catching up with podcast episodes. So I've decided to help me as much as you. I'm going to occasionally put out an episode to encourage, slash, force you to do something that we all need to do every now and then Stop, Breathe, Be still, Allow your mind two minutes to just check in with you.
Claire:You've probably experienced listening to a podcast with adverts. The advert comes on at a time when you can't fast forward because you're stuck with your hands in the washing up bowl while you're in the shower or you're driving and you're forced to listen to the whole advert. Well, I kind of hope you're in one of those situations now, because I'm going to encourage you to do something and feel like you just have to do it. Pretend there is no option to stop or fast forward, because I want to give you just two minutes just for you. Let's face it, you came to this episode expecting it to be at least 30 minutes, so I know that you have two minutes free and you know what, it might just make all the difference to your day. In these short episodes, I'm going to transport you somewhere different each time to come with me and then just ask you to think about one thing. Today, I want you to sit with me by the edge of the crystal clear sea in Cyprus as it laps on the sand, and you can feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, and this is where we're going to process today's question. So take a moment to just turn your focus inward and start with three deep breaths. Now, over the next two minutes, I want you to ask yourself what brought you joy recently.
Claire:It might be a very easy thing to identify and dwell on. Maybe there are so many things. You'll need to work to find one thing that brought you the most joy, that really tapped into the essence of who you are and brought you a smile, a laugh or even happy tears. It might be really hard to search for something that brought you joy recently. Maybe you don't remember anything that made you smile, brought a small glimmer to your day or just allowed you a brief moment of joy. You might have to work even harder to find it, latch onto it and notice it for what it is. It might not be something like a child's laughter, a funny moment with family, a big romantic gesture or a moment of love from another human.
Claire:Maybe it was something very small just going right. Maybe something fell out of the cupboard and you caught it and for a moment you felt like you were winning again. Maybe someone smiled at you and you just appreciated being seen. Maybe you drew strength from somewhere you didn't know you had it and for a brief second you felt strong. Maybe you stopped to smell a flower as you walked down the street, or something in your garden. Maybe your neighbour's garden bloomed and you took a moment to appreciate it. Maybe you looked out on a dark night and had a glimpse of the full moon. Maybe you looked at the sky and wondered at the colours or the cloud formations. However easy or hard it is to find your moments of joy, I want you to ask yourself the question and wait See what the answer is. It might surprise you or be something that you'll take more notice of in the future or appreciate more. So what brought you joy recently?
Claire:From me for joining me. But also there'll be parts of your own body and mind that are grateful that you stopped to notice them and just check in. Whatever it is you identify, don't let it go without doing something with it. Recognising emotions is a powerful way to understand ourselves better, feel more in control and improve our emotional intelligence. Matt Haig said you are not your feelings, you just experience them Anger, sadness, hate, depression, fear. This is the rain. You walk in, but you don't become the rain. You know the rain will pass and you walk on, and you remember the soft glow of the sun that will come again.
